And just like that, summer is yet again right around the corner. I feel incredibly ECSTATIC for this upcoming break for quite a few reasons, including a much-needed mental health break from the never-ending cycle that is the academic year to the excitement of finding new ways to live everyday life.
During summer, we often place expectations upon ourselves to break out of our comfort zone, set new goals, and make the most out of the transitional period. It’s almost like a second “New Year”, meaning that these goals can sometimes get lost along the way and before we realize it, the time has fled. A little routine here and there is exactly what you need to maximize the potential of summertime.
I’ve broken down some suggestions to tailor your perfect summer 23’ routine, but remember, it’s important to start slowly and build these habits at your own pace. Don’t feel pressured to get things correct right off the bat. Developing your everyday summer routine is a personal process and should help you grow as an individual, not stress you out because of a very strict schedule or false expectations you’ve set for yourself. Prioritize your well-being, and give yourself a break.
MY EXAMPLE ROUTINE:
Set a specific time to start your day.
This doesn’t necessarily mean the time you wake up, it can be the time your body feels rested enough to kick off the day, regardless of how long you’ve been sleeping. Personally, I am a morning girl and truly see a benefit in waking up early, getting ready, and making the most out of the day. This, however, isn’t the case for everyone, and oftentimes sleeping in and getting a couple of extra hours of sleep can do wonders for your mental health and well-being.
Dedicate time to taking care of yourself.
Now this part of your routine is subjective to your liking. You can do one of these, or a combination of all of them to give yourself the care you deserve. There are many little things you can do in the morning to start the day off right: You can dedicate some time to journaling, meditation, keeping a specific skin-care routine, or sunbathing (amongst many other possibilities).

Try your best to do something productive.
I get it. Summer is the time we have to break away from reality and not worry about being productive, however, it isn’t uncommon to find yourself in a bit of a rut when you don’t do something that adds value to your day. Some examples of potential things you could do include finding a workout routine, picking up a new hobby, trying out new activities with your friends, or finding a fun new recipe to try out. It's also okay to have days where you watch your favorite TV show on the couch.
Track your needs.
I cannot emphasize enough the importance of this step if you wish to adhere to a routine. Pick up a notebook and write down everything. How you felt at a specific moment, what works for you and what doesn’t, your upcoming schedule, your goals, and what motivates you. This method helps you stay on top of your routine and remain organized throughout the summer. You can even add a fun and personal element to this by decorating it to your likes, or by adding core memories of summer 23’ and branding it as your journal.

Summer 23’ is sure to be one for the books, so make the best of it by listening to yourself and creating your perfect routine.
