If you’re like me at all, you need music to function. This is the case for most of Gen Z, after all, we live in the age of air pods and unlimited streaming. Since my Freshman year of high school, I’ve cultivated the habit of putting on background music while I study to efficiently and effectively grasp the content. Whether you’re a student or not, I encourage you to listen and get to work, to see if it does the trick for you.
Here are a couple of my favorites:
Honorable Mention: I can’t put together a list of my top songs to study and not give credit where credit is due. I owe a big thanks to “Minecraft Ambiance Music” for getting me through so many study and work sessions. I know it sounds silly, but it doesn’t get more relaxing than this. Bonus points if the track you’re listening to includes rain or fireplace sounds. The main reason this didn’t make this list is that it isn’t as accessible as the other songs, given the fact that you can only find these on YouTube (for the most part). Don’t knock it until you try it, it truly goes a long way.
Eternal Youth- Rude: This song is an absolute masterpiece. I don’t know what exactly it is about it, but this, this is the one. I often go on YouTube and search for the “one-hour” version of the song, and before I know it, I’m staring at completed work in front of me.
Enough- Brian Eno & Fred Again: This song isn’t for you if you get easily distracted. It occasionally plays static sounds which could make it hard to concentrate, but something about hearing the vocalist saying “Don’t you even think of giving up” repeatedly, paired with the deep melody, never fails to get my creative juices flowing. As a matter of fact, I’m currently listening to this song as I procure the perfect playlist. I strongly recommend you give it a try at least once!
Good News- Mac Miller: If you’re someone who doesn’t do strictly instrumentals, don’t worry, I didn’t forget about you. This song is medium-paced but serves perfectly if you’re looking to play something casual in the background. It’s not a “hype” song, so you won’t get distracted, and it also creates a great flow to concentrate on.
What a Heavenly Way to Die- Troye Sivan: I Know Troye is a “big name” singer, but to me, he is still incredibly underrated. He deserves so much more recognition for all his work, especially his 2018 album “Bloom”. This song specifically, works perfectly in the background as you work. I have been using it for quite some time now and I absolutely adore it.
Bossa Nova- This isn’t a specific song, but a style of music that really does the trick. This can be compared to coffee shop background music, and what better place to study than at a coffee shop? It’s an incredibly relaxing style of music and at the same not “dull” or “flat” — which makes it easy for you to stay awake and focused. There are so many Bossa Nova artists out there, so I recommend searching for a playlist online!
Those were some of my favorite study songs! Let us know on our social media if you gave them a listen/ enjoyed any of them— or even if you have any suggestions!
